The "Corps of Cadets" drills on the Quad at The citadel. Although the 1,900 cadets who attend this venerable military college in Charleston, South Carolina, don't belong to the U,S. military, they're all required to take ROTC. Many do go on after graduation to accept commissions as officers in the U.S. Army.

Steeped in tradition, The Citadel often stages colorful parades and exercises on the red and white squares of the college's parade deck or "Quad."

In 1861, a group of cadets from The Citadel earned a permanent place in history by firing the first shots of the Civil War at a federal cargo ship delivering supplies to Fort Sumter.
